The Second Coming: A Love Story

Synopsis: Two men claim to be the Second Coming of Christ. Each claims the other is Satan in disguise. But only one is telling the truth.

In The Second Coming: A Love Story, the devilish new novel by Scott Pinsker, the culture war between Red America and Blue America turns shockingly real when two self-declared saviors appear on earth. The first “messiah” attracts legions of liberal and secular-progressive followers with his message of New Age brotherhood, quickly becoming the darling of the left. The second “messiah” preaches fire-and-brimstone traditional Christianity, gaining a grassroots army of conservative worshippers ready to battle to the death.

It’s finally happened: Red America and Blue America are headed for Armageddon!

Review: Being a pagan, I read this book with some skepticism. Jesus is not part of my faith but I can respect the faith the same as I respect other faiths under the pagan umbrella. This was a truly compelling read to me. I was immediately curious as to which of the two was really Jesus and which was Satan. There are similarities. I especially love the flashbacks to God and the angels in the beginning when He created the world. Tying that into a prophecy and the current world is brilliant.
Each of the two has disciples, and both find themselves drawn into the current world of politics. Michael is the seer for Israel, and is told his visions hold the key to the fate of the world. He's very soft and passive, shy, and endearing because he's the take the world on his shoulders type. His boyfriend, David, is a speechwriter, and something is very off with him. He's overly arrogant and combative. He's a narcissist. He can't take criticism. Frankly, I can't stand him.
Joe, the other man claiming to be Christ, recruits a lawyer Margaret, and a drug addict, Peter, neither of whom are likable. Margaret has questionable morals and Peter is too devoted. He feels that he's saved already so any methods he uses will be forgiven. They're both rather low and their base nature doesn't change when they come into contact with who they think is Jesus. Instead, they grow worse.
I'm not sure which of the two is actually Jesus, but I know I want to read the next book.
